District Texas was founded in the early 1950s by brewers from both Texas and Louisiana. Today membership is comprised of people working in large brewing and packaging facilities as well as smaller craft breweries. We hold two in-person meetings per year. The spring meeting is more technical and moves around our Texas/Louisiana territory. The late summer meeting is more social and is usually held in Kerrville, Texas. We offer up to 4 scholarships per year for the MBAA courses to our membership. We are a fun and knowledgeable group, always willing to share information.

Walt Powell Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is a memorial to Walt Powell set up by his parents, Walter Connally and Bolivia Powell. Walt was taken from us much too early on June 4, 2013 at the age of 33. For those of you that did not know Walt I want to share just a bit of Walt’s life.
Flix Brewhouse in Round Rock, Texas, cofounded by Walt, was the initial and only First-Run Cinema Craft Brewery in the world. At the time of his death, Walt was planning the national roll-out of several additional Flix Brewhouse locations. I am sure that there is currently another Flix Brewhouse in Des Moines, Iowa. Thus, his legacy continues!
During his career, Walt was a fixture at brew festivals and events around the country and was an active member of numerous craft beer social and trade groups. Walt’s idea of a great European vacation was visiting Trappist Brewing Monasteries in Belgium and being fluent in French he was able to glean many secrets which assisted him with his favorite beers, the sweet, Belgian brews!
I only met Walt once yet that brief encounter convinced me he was going to be a pillar in the craft brewing world. I only wish we could have had him with us much longer.
Walt’s father and mother want this scholarship to go to someone who really has a love for brewing and I am sure Walt is pleased with this fantastic opportunity that will benefit his colleagues!

Submit a comprehensive essay describing how passionate you are about the brewing industry, how you became involved in the brewing industry, why you love brewing, and highlight accomplishments. Please include your brewing history:
- Past and current brewing jobs
- Brewery and/or festival volunteering
- Brewing events attended, volunteered, or worked
- Brewing coursework or general beer coursework
- Homebrewing experience, club memberships, etc.
- Brewing/beer educator experience

Brewing Education Financial Assistance
MBAA District Texas encourages members to pursue brewing related educational opportunities. In order for each of us to stay competitive and self improve, continuous education is a must.
$4,000 Award
District Texas assists one member per year. An annual certificate for $4,000 is presented during each spring meeting, distributed upon proof of successful course completion.
Course Selections
Acceptable fields include malting, brewing, microbiology, sensory, engineering, statistics, and laboratory skills. Eligible institutions include MBAA courses, World Brewing Academy, Siebel, American Brewers Guild, UC Davis, and local colleges offering relevant food safety or industrial process classes.
Award Requirements
- Recipient must be an active District member in good standing for 2 years.
- Recipient must have 5 years of industry experience.
- Course contents must be relevant to the brewing industry.
- Submit form to District Vice President no later than February 1st.
- Executive group evaluates requests; formal responses provided by March 1st.
The Tom Reap Award
The Tom Reap Award was created in 1991, by District Texas, to honor the distinct member who most embodied the qualities valued in one of the district’s most respected and well-liked members, the late Tom Reap. Tom, who had been a brewer for over forty years, was the Brewmaster at Anheuser/Busch in Houston at the time of his retirement. Tom served as the national president of the Master Brewers Assoc. of the Americas in 1986. His dedication to the industry and to the association will be long remembered.

The Birth of MBAA District Texas
Paul Langenbeck was a founding member of MBAA District Texas 52 years ago, and continues to be an active member. At the Summer 2002 District Texas meeting, Paul shared a review of the District history…and reminds all of the questions every District faces: Who are we? Where are we? Where are we going? It’s good to record the beginning, and then ponder Paul’s questions.
The first meeting was held on February 1951 at the Pearl brewery in San Antonio. It was a large inaugural gathering, hosted by Harry Haglin, then Brewmaster at Pearl. Besides all the Texas breweries, the following allied industries were in representation: Maltsters, corn grits, hop vendors, machinery companies, glass/paper vendors, and principal laboratories like Siebel, Wallerstein, and Paul Lewis.
Breweries outside of Texas represented included Jackson Brewing Company, Dixie, American Brewing Company, and Falstaff. Texan breweries included El Paso, Mitchell, Blue Bonnet, Grand Prize, Southern Select, Lone Star, Pearl and Shiner.
Brewmasters at that first meeting are still remembered:
